Immanuel/God with Us: The Wonder of the Incarnation

Curated by Sarah Colago and Sandra Bowden

Bowden Collections is excited to present a traveling exhibition that focuses on the life of Jesus. Immanuel/God with Us: The Wonder of the Incarnation celebrates Jesus’ life on earth seen through the eyes and imagination of artists. The exhibition begins with the Annunciation and birth of the Savior, follows His ministry, and then moves through His Passion and Resurrection, culminating with his Ascension. Using a wide variety of media, twenty-three artists from ten countries picture Christ’s earthly life. These 26 artworks come together to offer the viewer a rich experience of seeing afresh Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection.

Immanuel is a Hebrew word meaning "God with us," and it expresses the wonder of the incarnation, the mystery that God "became flesh and made his dwelling among us" (John 1:14). God accomplished this with the birth of Jesus, when the Word, the Son and the second person of the Trinity became flesh. Matthew tells us that the birth of Jesus by the Virgin Mary is to "fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 'Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.’ Matthew 1:22-23

This is the incarnation. It is impossible to fathom the mystery of Christ’s Incarnation; nevertheless Jesus does take form in our physical world. Many have called this the “scandal” of the Incarnation—which the infinite God could somehow be present in the created world.

Immanuel God/God with US includes art from eleven countries, such as, Dominican Republic, Japan, France, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Slovakia, Mexico, England, Panama, and the United States. The pieces on display include paintings, embroidered molas, etchings, woodcuts, tempera, serigraphs, and woodcarving.

Bowden Collections offers a variety of traveling exhibitions available to museums, churches, colleges and seminaries: several feature the work of important historical artists such as Georges Rouault, Marc Chagall, Ottos Dix and Alfred Manessier; others explore topics related to the Bible. A packet containing everything needed to mount the exhibition with files for labels, itemized lists, a brochure or flyer in PDF format, high-resolution digital files of art in the exhibition, and shipping information is provided.
