Scripture Texts

This exhibition features a series of etchings on the Life of Christ from the New Testament. These innovative illustrations by the Dutch printmaker Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) were published in a 1704 Dutch bible.

De Hooghe was a figure of remarkable skill, and has been called one of the greatest artists to come out of the late Dutch Golden Age. He was certainly one of the most prolific, producing over 3,500 prints. One of the most remarkable illustrators of the late 17th century, he worked in the style of Rembrandt with loose sketchy lines and strong contrast of light and shadow.

The Reformation brought about a movement in which images were removed from the churches and places of worship. The newly formed Dutch Republic did not escape the Protestant breaking of statues and images. However images, especially prints continued to have an important role in Europe, particularly if they played a didactic role. Studying the Bible and preaching the Word of God were the primary ways of communicating the faith.

During this time Romeyn de Hooghe illustrated two series of Biblical prints, one of Old Testament images and the other New Testament. Each etching contains five scenes that relate to an event in the life of Jesus, and have specific biblical references listed with each image. Even in a time when the church in the Netherlands frowned on art that portrayed the bible,  these illustrations with the biblical references were especially important for personal study of the Bible and demonstrate how images found a way back into the life of the Protestant church.

The twenty-seven illustrations in this exhibition come from the illustrated Dutch State Bible (Statenbijbel). De Hooghe’s illustrations complement the definitive Dutch translation of Luther’s German Bible, which was completed in 1648 by de Visscher and based on a previous Mennonite translation. The Statenbijbel was an essential possession of most Dutch households for three centuries, from the mid-17th century through the mid-20th century.
